Dr. Robert Hernandez serves as the Medical Director overseeing long-term care at Utuqqanaat Inaat (a place for Elders) at Maniilaq Health Center in the rural village of Kotzebue where he has worked for just over a decade. He is described by Director of Nursing Jessica Turner, who nominated him for this award, as, “someone who goes above and beyond in all aspects of patient care. He is a shining example of what a true rural physician should be.”
Dr. Hernandez does everything in his power to ensure that patients receive needed treatment or supplies – both at the facility and through home visits to Elders of the community.

Described as trustworthy and empathetic, Dr. Hernandez takes the time to thoroughly explain medical conditions, putting his patients at ease.
